Held in Doyle's Charleston gallery and livestreamed on Doyle.com, Charleston Collects offers an exciting array of artwork, furniture, silver, decorative arts and jewelry from Southern collections and estates. Artwork by Alice R. Huger Smith and Other Artists Among the highlights of the upcoming auction are two works by Charleston artist Alice R. Huger Smith (1876–1958) titled Wild Rice on the Savannah (est. $25,000-45,000) and Towers on the Scotch Church, Charleston (est. $8,000-12,000). A key figure in the Charleston Renaissance of the early 20th century, Smith is best known for her dream-like watercolors of Charleston and the Carolina Lowcountry. Other artists represented in the sale include John Carroll Doyle, Claude Flynn Howell, William Aiken Walker and Anke Weyer. Southern Regional Furniture & Decorative Arts The selection of furniture and decorative arts features Property from the Collection of Joreen White Wenzl and Daniel Wenzl of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Assembled over many decades, this remarkable and extensive collection showcases fine examples of Southern regional furniture and decorative arts. Among the offerings are a circa 1800 Federal inlaid walnut tall chest of drawers, probably Tennessee (est. $2,000-4,000); a circa 1825 cherry sugar chest, possibly Kentucky (est. $1,000-1,500) and various other chests and tables, as well as stoneware jugs, coin silver and miniature furniture. Silver The silver section of the sale features numerous flatware services, goblets and julep cups, as well as a North Carolina silver water pitcher by T.W. Brown of Wilmington with a presentation inscription dated 1840 (est. $1,500-2,500). Jewelry & Fine Watches Certain to attract attention are over 40 lots of stylish jewelry including glittering diamonds, gold jewelry and signed pieces, as well as fine watches by Cartier, Ebel and other makers.
