Description

Austrian Order of the Golden Fleece, circa 1855-1868, crafted by court jeweler Christian Friedrich Rothe. Comprising three sections: a thick gold bale with blue enamel inscribed "Rothe"; a gold swirl with blue enamel, inscribed "Pretum Laborum Non Vile" on one side and "Non Alivd" on the other; followed by a gold cartouche depicting a man spearing a dragon on one side and a lone warrior facing men with pikes on the other. Below, a black enamel orb with seven white teardrops, encircled by red enamel flames. At the bottom, a golden fleece of a ram, suspended centrally. Gold content unmarked, scratch tested as 14k, with a blue enamel clasp. Accompanied by a diminutive gold-plated and enameled golden fleece pocket chain. The gold disc is inscribed with the same motto, featuring enameled and gold-plated links, suspending a smaller gold-plated version of the order.
