Description

Georgian/Victorian lot of four gold/gold-filled hair-work mourning and other brooches, comprising a rectangular brooch with a wide black and purple enameled frame surrounding woven hair under glass; a small brooch with a woven hair center surrounded by seed pearls and round-cut garnets; a rectangular brooch featuring an enameled design with a willow tree draping over a memorial, set with a glass cabochon enclosing possibly strands of hair, engraved "ST / to / SJH" on the back; and an oval brooch with a drawing of buildings, trees, and a bridge, with a frame set with rectangular oval-cut garnets. Unmarked, the rectangular brooch with memorial and the oval brooch tested as 14k and 10k gold fineness respectively but may be heavy rolled gold-plated. Late 18th/19th century. Larger rectangular brooch measures 1 1/4" x 1" overall.
