Skull and CrossbonesDescription
An early 20th-century regimental brooch in silver and gold, depicting a skull and crossbones set with rose-cut diamonds, suspending a blue enamel banner bearing the motto OR GLORY in reserved gold lettering. Together, the motif and inscription form the motto Death or Glory, associated with the 17th Lancers, a British cavalry regiment established in 1759 and known as the Death or Glory Boys. The badge commemorates the death of Major-General James Wolfe during the Battle of Quebec in 1759, part of the Seven Years' War. The regiment participated in the Charge of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War in 1854. Following its amalgamation with the 21st Lancers in 1922, the regimental imagery continued to be used. Length 2.7 cm, gross weight approximately 4.50 g.Condition
